MSc Applied Microbiology

Program Overview

Microbes are vitally important to all life on Earth. As versatile organisms, they play a major role in various biochemical processes such as biodegradation, bio deterioration, climate change, food spoilage, epidemiology and biotechnology. By applying microbes in a range of controlled settings, microbiologists can harness their power for beneficial use in areas as diverse as healthcare, food production and agriculture. Microbiology research has been and continues to be, central to meeting many of the current global aspirations and challenges, such as maintaining food, water and energy security for a healthy population on a habitable earth. Microbiology research will also help to answer big questions such as ‘how diverse is life on Earth?’, and ‘does life exist elsewhere in the Universe’?

Programme Outcomes

Microbiology is a branch of Biology that includes the study of growth characteristics and various other aspects related to the microorganism, since microorganisms provide the model used in agricultural, industrial, medical and molecular biology. There is a growing recognition of the potential of microorganisms in a range of applied areas. Microbiologists find jobs in many places like research organization, pharmaceutical, food, beverage and chemical industries, Universities, Research Institutes etc.

The essential on going work of microbiologists includes making agriculture more sustainable, cleaning up pollution, manufacturing biofuels, and processing food and drink. With the threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and global pandemics on the rise, microbiologists are also helping to produce the vital life-saving drugs that many people around the world rely on for their survival.

Credits & Evaluation

Student progression and knowledge gaining process were assessed by giving curricular based activities like seminars, assignments and report writing about their industrial visit, educational tour, seminars, symposium, training and workshops attended.

By conducting Internal test-I, Internal test-II and Model exam the student’s progression in their subject with prescribed syllabus was evaluated and proper credits were given to every subject they study.

The final year under graduate and post graduate students research knowledge was assessed by offering the research project work submitted along with a research report containing proper scientific data in prescribed format and also with their publications in well renowned, indexed and high impact factor containing scientific journals.
