Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. Psychologists are actively involved in studying and understanding the mental processes, personality, emotion, behaviour, and cognition of humans. Psychology is one of the professional courses students can choose in their higher education. The field of psychology is considered a “Hub Science” with strong connections to the medical sciences, social sciences, and education (Boyack, Klavans, & Borner, 2005).

The Under Graduate Level curriculum begins with the basic concepts of Psychology. During the three years of the program, the learners are introduced to the latest trends in psychology with a specialization in the field of Abnormal Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Industrial Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, and Bio Psychology along with Experimental Psychology to enrich their knowledge on psychological assessment.

The school has spacious and well – equipped laboratory with the Apparatus – Seguin Form Board, Binet Problem solving Test, Pyramid Puzzle, Alexander pass Along test of Intelligence, Koh’s Block Test, Mirror Drawing Apparatus, Electronic Rational learning Apparatus, Bhartia’s Performance Battery test, Mulleelyer Illusion board, Tachistoscope – Span of Attention.

Test Materials – Eysenck’s Personality Inventory, Emotional Intelligence and Maturity scale, Test Anxiety Scale, Student’s Stress Scale, Decision making Style Scale, Recall and Recognition Test, Short term memory test, Leadership preference Scale, Youth problem Inventory,  Bell’s Adjustment Inventory, Ishihara Colour deficiencies, and Aggression Scale are available for routine student practical’s as well as for research purpose.

World Mental Health Day conducted on October 10th, 2019

On World Mental Health Day, October 10th, TamilNadu Psychoanalytical Science Association had organized different competitions based on the theme “Child Psychology”. The association had conducted various co-curricular competitions such as, drawing, speech competition, poetry writing and essay writing. The event was coordinated by Dr. A. Gomathi, Assistant Professor of Psychology Department. The department of psychology enthusiastically participated in the above-mentioned competitions. Our students learned from the competitions and won gloriously in the same. The students of psychology department are full of potential and will be eagerly participating in such upcoming events in the future.

National Seminar on “Current Trends of Psychologist” on 9th Nov. 2019.

Department of Psychology, CMS College of Science and Commerce, Coimbatore Organized a Seminar on “Current Trends of Psychologist” on 9th November 2019, our beloved Chief Guest Dr. V. Chandra Mohan, Associate Professor, Institute of Aerospace medicine, was the honorable resource person. He and his team were well-versed in various fields of psychology. He is giving psychological training to various colleges of psychology students. They were making awareness of scope of psychology and various career choices and opportunities for psychology students. Moreover, they taught about psychological tests and methods.Students enthusiastically participated in the seminar. The seminar was an interactive session and the students gained a lot of information. End the program the resource person provide certificate to the students. The students were well trained and they wish to be a part of such seminars in the near future.

Field Visit at Global Institute of Behavioral Technology

On 27/11/2021, 2nd year students of the Department of Psychology, CMS college of science and commerce, went on a field visit to the Global Institute of behavioural technology. The field visit was organized by Dr. A. Gomathi, Head of the Department of Psychology, CMS college of science and commerce. Global Institute of Behavioural technology is run by Dr. Vedagiri Ganesan sir, at Navavoor, Marudhamalai road. He gave incredible insights on the techniques for curing many mental health issues to the students. Students learnt various methods that are very useful for therapy gaining their own experience from Dr. Vedagiri Ganesan sir who has more than 50 years of experience. Behavioural therapy techniques such as Anger Reversal Technique (ART), Systematic Desensitization technique, Laughter therapy, etc. Dr. Vedagiri Ganesan sir is an extraordinary resource person for all the students pursuing Psychology as a career. Students learnt a lot of important things on just a single day in the most professional way possible and the session was made very interactive. Students even gained a solution for their own problems they deal with in their life, simultaneously learning to be able to provide instant solution for the issues of those around them.

Field Visit at ‘Wings Mind Care Center’

On 10/12/2021, Friday, 1st and 2nd year students of the Department of Psychology, CMS college of science and commerce, went on a field visit to Wings Mind Care Center (Wings Clinic) at Gandhipuram, Coimbatore. The field visit was arranged by Dr. A. Gomathi, Head of the Department of Psychology, CMS college of science and commerce. Wings Mind Care Center is an esteemed psychological clinic for mentally disturbed children and adults. Various professional mental health workers such as, Occupational Therapist, Counselling Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist and Special Teachers for Physically and Mentally challenged children work at the clinic. The mind care centre also offers internships and field visits. The Founder and Director of the Wings is Ms. Sreedevi Sekaran. The field visit was carried out by her, who has multiple degrees including Psychology and a lot of experience in this field. Our students were able to get a lot of knowledge on what psychology holds as career in real world and asked Ms. Sreedevi Sekaran a lot of questions about treating clients, treating different clients, about Clinical and Counselling Psychology, and the problems that psychologists can experience once professionally starting to help people. Students interacted with the resource person cheerfully and eagerly to learn more till the very end of the session.

Seminar on ‘Role of Psychologists in Defence’

Department of Psychology, CMS college of science and commerce has conducted a seminar on “Role of Psychologists in Defence” on 15th December 2021, Wednesday (15/12/2021). The program was organized by, Dr. A. Gomathi, Head of the Department of Psychology. All the students from UG Psychology attended the seminar and gained knowledge. The respected Chief guest for the program was Dr. V. Chandramohan, President PAPA, Defence clinical psychologist (Retd.). The program was very useful and refreshing for the students. Dr. V. Chandramohan’s experience in Defence as clinical psychologist raised the hope for the students who are planning on clinical psychology. The seminar was more than just about Psychologists in Defence, he talked about all the jobs a psychologist can do and the qualifications for that job. He gave information about the internship program he conducts and gave tips on making money part time in the field of Psychology. Students were really motivated to accomplish great things like he did by the end of the session.

Seminar on ‘Balancing Emotional Intelligence in Adolescence’

On 21/12/2021, Department of Psychology, CMS college of science and commerce, conducted a Seminar on “Balancing Emotional Intelligence in Adolescence”. The program was organized by, Dr. A. Gomathi, Head of the Department of Psychology. All the students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd year UG Psychology attended the seminar. The knowledgeable resource person was Ms. SelviSanmugam, Vazhikati Psychologist. She demonstrated the significance of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in addition to IQ for success in life. She explained strengths and areas of Emotional Intelligence in an enthusiastic way that gained every student’s attention. She gave a lot of examples for Emotional Intelligence, both real-life and movies. She also talked about ways to develop ones Emotional Quotient. Students actively participated in the Seminar and made it very interactive.
