style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ThNational Service Scheme, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs &amp; Sports Govt. of India, popularly known as NSS was launched in Gandhiji&#8217;s Birth Centenary Year 1969, in 37 Universities involving 40,000 students with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TToday, NSS has more than 3.2 million student volunteers on its roll spread over 298 Universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary Councils and Directorate of Vocational Education all over the country. From its inception, more than 3.75 crores students from Universities, Colleges and Institutions of higher learning have benefited from the NSS activities, as student volunteers<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall objective of the National Service scheme is educational and service to the community. This campaign aims to accomplish the vision of a &#8216;Clean India&#8217; by 2 October 2019, the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. These numbers are expected to increase to 600 million by 2031.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SBM is being implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development (M\/o UD) for urban areas. These guidelines are for the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Census 2011 also showed that in 4,041 statutory towns, close to eight million households do not have access to toilets and defecate in the open (7.90 million).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak sanitation has significant health costs and untreated sewage from cities is the single biggest source of water resource pollution in India. This indicates both the scale of the challenge ahead of the Indian cities and the huge costs incurred from not addressing them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p><b>Coimbatore Corporation \u2013 Action Plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mission Swachh Bharat Coimbatore is initiated by Corporation Commissioner Dr.Vijayjarthikeyan I.A.S., in order to create sustainable solutions for Clean Coimbatore. The &#8216;Swachh Bharat Abhiyan&#8217; is a massive mass movement that seeks to create a Clean India. Cleanliness was very close to Mahatma Gandhi&#8217;s heart. A clean India is the best tribute we can pay to Bapu when we celebrate his 150th birth anniversary in 2019. Mahatma Gandhi devoted his life so that India attains &#8216;Swarajya&#8217;. Specific objectives are: Eliminate open defecation by constructing toilets for households, communities Eradicate manual scavenging Introduce modern and scientific municipal solid waste management practices Enable private sector participation in the sanitation sector Change people\u2019s attitudes to sanitation and create awareness The program plans to construct 12 crore toilets in rural India by October 2019, at a projected cost of Rs.1.96 lakh crore (US$29 billion). \u00a0 SWACHH BHARAT MISSION (URBAN) According to Census 2011, India\u2019s urban population is 377 million or 31% of the total population. These numbers are expected to increase to 600 million by 2031. SBM is being implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development (M\/o UD) for urban areas. These guidelines are for the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban). The Census 2011 also showed that in 4,041 statutory towns, close to eight million households do not have access to toilets and defecate in the open (7.90 million).
